The Syllabus

1. Computer Hardware and Software
CPU and hardware components, input/output/storage devices, systems vs. application software, and proper care of equipment.
2. Computer Applications
Word processing, spreadsheets, databases, monitoring and control systems, expert systems, computer security, data protection, and viruses.
3. Social and Economic Implications of Computers
Positive and negative effects of computer use in organisations, and the need for skills upgrading.
4. Systems Development Life Cycle
Analysing an existing system, designing a new one, implementation strategies, and evaluating and maintaining a system.
5. Programming Concepts
Structured programming, flowcharts, pseudocode, trace tables, procedures/subroutines, program translators, and low-level vs. high-level languages.
6. Data and File Management
Data types, data entry and capture methods, validation and verification, file organisation, and file access methods.
7. Systems and Communications
Networks, LAN vs. WAN, network protocols and topologies, communication hardware, and types of operating systems (real-time, single-user, multi-user).
The Project
A compulsory coursework project (70 marks) completed over three terms, where you identify a real problem, design a computer-based solution, and produce a full written report covering analysis, design, testing, and evaluation.
Exam Structure

Paper 1 — Practical (1 hr 30 min, 30 marks)
A hands-on paper with three compulsory questions; you produce a printed copy of your work.
Paper 2 — Written (2 hrs 30 min, 100 marks)
15–20 structured and short-answer questions covering knowledge, problem-solving, and applied understanding.
Paper 3 — The Project (70 marks)
A term-long coursework project assessing your ability to analyse a problem and build a working solution.
